The early childhood years are the most important years to lay the foundation for your child's physical, social and emotional development, as well as literacy, thinking and creativity skills.
As John Holt, the renowned author and educator, put it beautifully:
|“…we do not need to motivate children into learning by wheedling, bribing or bullying. We do not need to keep picking away at their minds to make sure that they are learning. What we need to do – and all we need to do – is to give them as much help and guidance as they need to and ask for, listening respectfully when they feel like talking, and then get out of the way. We can trust them to do the rest.”|
However, we know parents today do not always have the luxury in our fast-paced world to spend enough time with their children to lay this foundation. It is not a question of priority, but a question of making the right resources available to parents.
That is why SEED Institute, Singapore’s largest trainer of preschool teachers, is working with the Lien Foundation to develop the Science Of Play – a unique Singaporean resource of meaningful play activities for parents of preschoolers.
These activities are conceptualized by play experts – Singapore’s very own preschool teachers – and written with clear objectives and helpful illustrations to guide busy parents.
Each activity has been vetted by the early childhood education faculty at SEED Institute, before they are allowed to carry the endorsement of the institute.
Why did we call this the “Science of Play”? According to Maria Montessori, Play is the Work of the child.
During play, children are testing ideas, practising skills, stretching their imagination and creativity. They are also learning to communicate, negotiate and collaborate. Play is essential for their learning.
So, Daddies and Mommies, learn to play! It is the best gift you can give your child.
